Troublesome developments in Eritrea regarding EPPF

There is more disturbing news regarding Ethiopian opposition groups who have been given shelter in Eritrea. A few days ago we learned about the disappearance of Col. Tadesse Muluneh, one of the founders of Ethiopian People’s Patriotic Front (EPPF). We have requested Eritrean officials to investigate and let us know what happened to him. It’s now been over 2 weeks and we have not received any official response so far. However, our sources in Eritrea have informed us that his arrest has been orchestrated by Eritrean adviser to Ethiopian opposition groups named Col. Fitsum. Yesterday we also learned that current EPPF chairman Meazaw Getu’s movement has been restricted and his vehicle has been taken away by the same colonel. During the past few months, at least two central committee members have been killed and several have fled. Hundreds of fighters have also left their units… [details later]

According to the wikileake released cables, all the efforts from Eritrea to improve relation with USA have been turned down by the Obama administration. The cable also suggested that USA has been extending hands to help work withe unnamed Eritrean military officials who dare to make a change. I think these unnamed officials obviously should be in contact with the Ethiopian rulers in Addis. Col Fistum could be a good supect and it is a wake up call for the Eritrean gov’t to take the necessary action before it too late.

  4. Elias, Personally i think that you know the fact that EPPF was a slave of Shabia long time ago. Neverthless you remaind silent covering up all these facts for various reasons.I believe that you love your motherland Ethiopia, and you wanted to strengthen the strugle against woyane, and I understand that you have tried to solve the mess under private within the Eppf and with shabia. I know that ploitics needs secrecy, and the right for public inforamtion has alot of resaonable exceptions.You and other Ethiopian braves were fulled by shabia offeres.Even you have done shabia leader Esayas to confirm you on that Shabia needs the removal of woyane and a unified Ethiopia.Do you really expect Esyas to tell the truth in public what feels about Ethiopia?I was pessimists on any kind of struggle backed by shabia.The only open space we may have in the near future is South Sudan but that really needs close ties with Future independent south Sudan leadrers.We have to really worrk hard on that.     Oh yeah! Troublesome developments in Eritrea…? You have been told time and again that it is against Eritrea’s long term interest to help EPPF or any other Woyane enemies as Afewerki knows that only woyane junta is that advocates for sovereignty of Eritrea. That is the reason for most Ethiopians to believe that those two cancers of the horn are needs each other for their survival.
    But, you never listen; you will look things from having Eritrean blood perspective and put your self as a die-hard supporter of this crook regime.
    These kinds of incidents were reported earlier and you were insisting and writing to your audience that you are working behind the scene to resolve the problem while you were advocating for shabya mercenaries.
    One thing that most of your audiences are certain about is that, you are working for Shabiya. And most of us were telling you that your men from Eritrea are hell bent to destroy anything Ethiopian despite your loyalty for them. We have been telling you all along that these mercenaries are not trusted to deal with, but you were dancing with them call that brutal tyrant a man of a millennium and defending them and crying foul when the embargo against that Dracula was in place.
    Currently, according to wiki leaks, your idol Isayas afewerki, a pathological liar like yourself is boot-licking the American ambassador to normalize his country relationship with the US and you know what the answer that they gave him? He should see the recent history of Afghanistan and they gave him an example of Afghanistan, and if he did not stop helping al-shabab they will not hesitate to invade his “country” and they started talking with generals in Eritrea for possible quo.   7. Let’s not jump to conclusions here, it’s unlikely that they will take such a measure without a good reason. As the recent media has shown there were/are efforts to infiltrate the Eritrean Military. If these individuals have lent a hand, then they must face the consequences of their actions.

  12. For those who say “I told you so”, I say ‘Go to hell’. This is what I like about Ethiopian Review. When everyone criticizes the struggle from Eritrea, Ethiopian review stands firm. It is been a couple of years and before we hear any military advancement, now we are reading the troublesome EPPF facing from Eritrean government. Yet, we are not reading this news from other website, instead from the same trusty website. This is what professional journalism to me. No matter what, the struggle for freedom wills continues from anywhere. However, the Eritrean government needs to answer for such uncalled action.

If so, if what has been posted is true that Ethiopian Review was aware of the killing and fleeing of EPPF members why it took you, Elias, this long to tell the truth, and if it’s indeed the truth, what was your source or who did you talk to, what was the reason for the killing or arresting if it ever indeed happened? Is there any EPPF movement that is operating in Eritrea or not? If yes, why are not been arrested or killed? Have talk to those members? If so, what was their take on the issue…..? Could this also be Wayane cooked diversion to take the spot light away from them?

    Using Shabiya for Ethiopia’s cause is one thing and trusting is another thing. EPPF trusted Shabiya, which is naive. Did u really think that Shabiya would help people who fight for Ethiopia. Is it not crystal clear that Shabiya does not want strong Ethiopia? Why did not u report wikileaks cables on Eritrea? U did it in case of Ethiopia. Above all, there was a guy who exposed all about EPPF and Col. Fistum. So it nothing new what u r reporting now.

    Thanks following up on the condition and status of Col. Tadesse Muluneh and that of the EPPF. I have always been suspicious of the independence of any movement operating in another country’s territory (especially, inside Eritrea).
    Now, my suspicions have been realized.

    It has been an open secret that Shabia does not allow any Ethiopian movement freely unless it meets its own grand agenda. Therefore. knowing Shabia and EPPF, this finding is not truly a surprise.

  22. Wow – Although such kind of action was expected from the Eastern African “Mad Dog” – President Isaias, I never expect that I will learn about such things from the Ethiopian Review. Thank you Elias for sharing this news.

    EPPF management and other opposition leaders were indeed very naive to expect help from President Isaias who also doesn’t allow opposition to his own party. Unfortunately, Woyannes will be the ones who ones again get a valuable assistance from their northern brothers.

    We are proving time and again that both Weyane and Shaebia are sworn enemy of the Ethiopian and Eritrean people. The strategy must be to fight both.

    Shaebia’s agenda on Ethiopia was clear. Seeing a disintegrated Ethiopia. He needed Ethiopia’s opposition groups only and only to help facilitate this destructive mission.

    This is where you differed from many of us: you were expecting “a dove from the egg of a snake”. Isaias is a man with a big ambition, too big for leader of a small poor country.

    His intentions have never been hidden. He has openly declared that Eritrean independence will not be sustainable as long as Ethiopia remains strong and united.

    Melles and Isaias are two sides of the same coin. If we have the power, we should fight them both. Otherwise, let us concentrate our effort on our primary target: the tyrant in 4 Kilo, without dissipating our energy trying to woo Isaias.

  32. -First let see the situation carefully, befrore arriving to conclusion.
    -If somebody make a mistake no matter who he is, he will pay the price.
    -Based on ELIAS’S article it looks, there was power struggle among EPPF, or there are some inflitrators of WOYANE, like they did with ESFNA.
    -That racoon MELES in one interview said that he didn’t only bought weapon to fight ERITREA, it also bought also someone in Eritrea to do his dirt job, but his professor Isayas knew all the trick, he teached Meles well inadvance and neutralized them.
    -Meles failed to occupy Eritrea again, with all popular support and all mechanized army he had, but if he thinks “opposition” can make a difference? I don’t think so, He might do the same, humane wave offensive like the last war, but if it didn’t work, that time, if it didn’t worked with DERG what makes us to believe this time to work?
    -Conclusion it is good to purge, some of the leaders of EPPF, if we want struggle to be success. LET WAIT AND SEE…

  33. Let’s not gang up on Brother Elias on what is now happening to EPPF group and its fighters in Eritrea. I agree with him that such disappearances and imprisonments should be disturbing. I was not 100% sold on the idea of relying solely on one government for support or only violence is the only way of getting rid of this specter we have back home. In fact, as a man of peace and non-violent struggle, I detest war and violence. Who taught those juntas in Brazil, Uruguay, Taiwan, South Korea, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Columbia and alike will be toppled almost peacefully and replaced by democratic systems? I am really saddened by the fate of this officer who I am told that he was a former pilot in the Ethiopian Air Force who was fired by this goon from Dedebit before he fled to Eritrea. I have also read a story how he used his knowledge to train the fledgling Eritrean Air Force in the 1990’s. I hope the officials there will come to their senses and release him with out any further delay. He is a refugee and powerless. For now I would let our Eritrean brothers and sisters do the critiquing work of their government.

  35. It is amazing how some people are quick to be judgmental. I guess that may be human nature, or is it? We have been told by Elias and ER that Eritrea or Shabians on the side of Ethiopians for so long only to be thrown like hot potatoe faster than a blink of the eye. For the record, I will stand by my long held principled position that Shabia is probably the best political friendship we could ever hope to develop.
    Having said that, I will be willing to do what is good for Ethiopia even it means no more relationship with Shabia if, and this is a big if, we have a definitive (not circumstantial) evidence of Shabia working against the interest of our people. Keep in mind, I am not as excited as some of the forumers seem to be because of some rumours – and that is what it is right now.
    But, there is something tat is starkly clear to me from these latest developments and those are:
    • All sorts of forumers are coming out of the woodworks and air out their ever chavinistic and unsustainable hatred of Eritrea…
    • The ever not so hidden desire of subjugating the Eritrean people is getting a whip call from its stagnant horizon…
    • All of a sudden the EPPF and others that were heralded as the true sons and daughters of Ethiopia are being dismissed as simple Shabia tools…

    Of course, every one of us is entitled to his or her own views. However, I believe these allegations that are being leveled against Shabia and/or EPPF may turn out to be false or highly exaggerated. So we shed our senses govern our actions – not our emotions. If you have the etching for confrontation with Shabia, you will probably have plenty of opportunity. And by crying “Zeraf!”, “Zeraf!” here in the Diaspora won’t do you any good and won’t change the condition on the ground.

  36. I don’t know why Eliase opted to present his concernes in this way..u have created a field day to Weyanes. The reason for EPPF disintegration is its incapacity and indifference to the creation of coalition of forces that was announced recently. They were told either to join or vacate the country. I have information a reorganized EPPF has been formed that is ready to work with the recently formed coaltion of forces led by Mola Asghedom. Eritrea supports only to perfoming rebels….non-performing rebeles should vacate the country. That is the case and it better for Ethiopian opposition.

Eppf needs a strong leadership.In my opinion eppf is a typical amhra neftegna who live in the stone age Ethiopia-the hastse Tewdros era. Don’t blame Solomon Tekalegn, blame the root cause.   39. EPPF or other organizations who are fighting against woyane are not there (in Eritrea) for the sake of Eritreans. By the same token Eritrea’s help to these rebels is not a charity. We have to recognise that it’s based on a mutual interest. Crying foul when the going get tough doesn’t serve anybody’s interest. Let’s be cool-headed and rein on our emotions at least until we have the real picture, if any, what is exactly happened.

  42. I have stated my plan in E.R, Nazret.com and elsewhere in these forums about our need to depend on GOD and on ourselves to shake off the yoke of slavery imposed upon us by the regime in power. Suggestion was made about the need to train military experts and special elite forces out side Ethiopia. Stress and emphasis was added on the need to adopt principle of self reliance and ananimity.Drawing from experience found on previous, Eplf,tplf ties, believed the impossibility of ties with the malignant Shabia- where we must avoid dealings at all times.

    Consider this facts-
    1- In1976, eplf and tplf jointly fought against EPRP’S-EPRA at asimba because they reasoned it is an Amhara dominated Party, even though the facts speak to the contrary.
    2-In 1980 eplf and tplf jointly fought ELF-Jevehai and evicted it from Omhager and eventually were forced to the Sudan.
    3-Eplf is unfaithful towards OLF and the list can grow.
    Shabi chief is equally wicked as melese is According to Haggie Enlrich; Isaias has facilitated Ermias Debesay to be poisoned. Debase who as his own closest associate has been killed because of his views towards ELF.
    Shabians at Tplf need one another, they must co-exist or else they will not be.

  43. Don’t seek shelter in unstable house! It will either suck you in a sink hole or collapse on your head. Friends and foes to african opposition parties are seldom principled, they are mostly after their own short time benefits.

  44. It is really unreasonable and uncalled for to attack Elias for reporting the information from his sources. The fact that he reported about the disappearance of Colonol Tadesse Muluneh shows his even handedness in journalism. Look at other Ethiopian websites and listen to some of these radio stations. Do you find any journalistic balance there, at least in most of them? No.

    All of us know that Elias, as most Diaspora Ethiopians, is working for the fall of Woyane. Anti-Woyane groups like EPPF and Ginbot 7 looked around and concluded that the best way to launch an assault and propanda attack on Woyane was through Eritrea. They discovered long ago that Sudan, Djibouti or Kenya are not viable for this kind of mission. So, they chose Eritrea. And Ethiopian Review supported this agenda.

    We also have to remember that every politician, be it Meles, Isayas, Obama Putin etc first and foremost work for their political survival and also for their own country’s interests. That is their job.

    Remember Isayas and Meles had been bosom buddies, almost like brothers, until 1998? Ethiopian and Eritrean opposition groups cried foul from abroad cursed both of them who led their respective government from Addis or Asmara. Then came 1998 and the unnecessary and meaningless (my own opinion) war came and went. The two former “almost brothers” now became enemies.
    The Ethiopian and Eritrean opposition groups resurrected. Some went to Addis Ababa and some went to Asmara.

    Now we hear that EPPF is in trouble in Eritrea and seemingly has a problem with the Eritrean leader. That could spell the same problem for Ginbot 7. And if what we hear is true this could indicate that Isayas and Meles have decided to communicate with each other and are working on a rapproachmant on condition that each should throw out opposition groups from their respective capital. That is one possibility. But on the other hand it could also be possible that Isayas, assuming that he is still a bitter enemy of Meles, might think that Colonel Tadesse is too slow for his taste and may want to replace him. I don’t know; I am just assuming. My assumption could be wrong or could be correct.

    But the point of this argument is that politicians anywhere, including Meles and Isayas, have their own agendas and they always work first and foremost for their own interest. This could be one case concerning the reported disappearance of Colonel Tadesse.

    But in the final analysis, heaping criticism on Elias for supporting the opposition agenda after they got refuge in Asmara doesn’t make sense. Let’s wait and see what is going on in the Horn of Africa. We may be in for a huge surprise.

  47. I knew it! I knew it, shelter in Eritrea is fake. I am sure Shabia is going to turn against EPPF sooner or later. Unless Shaebia is secretly working with Weyane this could not have happened. Never the less, god help EPPF, they have to do what they have to do, even take risk to free Ethiopia. We need to help them. Elias, how about discussing to your buddy Isayas? I thought we have been told, Shaebia means well, and Isayas is safe? We need your explanation Elias since you have been propping Isayas for so long.

    Why don’t you vacate the colonel by deporting him instead of putting him in jail him. As you know one who is jailed in Eritrea lives to see the light of day again. Don’t fear the truth Mr. What Elias did is explain the situation. He did not even take sides on this matter.

  49. Whom to trust?

    I have been hoping the Eritrean government will be in full support of EPPF to liberate Ethiopia from the Woyanne regime; it seems the tide is turning not only against the EPPF but against all the Ethiopian people who have been waiting patiently for their liberation by the EPPF.

    I think Col. Fitsum may be one of Meles’ agents to stifle the power of EPPF and there by get some kind of assurance from the Woyanne regime never to invade Eritrea and leave Badime to Eritrea.

    Meles Seitanawi has the money to bribe any Eritrean official to break down the ties between EPPF and the Eritrean government and to destabilize the newly independent nation of Eritrea.

    I really do not know the facts at this time why the Eritrean government betrays EPPF; I am just speculating for the time being until Elias Kifle finds out what is going on in Asmara behind the closed door.

    Infact, this has been the only difference I had with you. You couild not accept or make a second thought based on the facts history taught us. Do you remember the article I sent it to your ebsite saying, “Beware the devil Essayas, he had a homework Ethiopia has to do in 100 years”. I was affraid he would shoot EPPF army when they advance to attack Weyane.I could say You learn the hard way. I did not have any question on your nationalism.

    On the other hand though Seye Abraha and Gbiru Asrat are a lesser devils than Essayas Afewerki, they are still unfaithful to ethiopian integrity.

    The solution should be to call a spade a spade instead of relying on temporary fixes. Elias, keep on calling the spade a spade. Please do not thrust jacket changers. Mandela did not know he could be freed after 27 years of imprisonment. Mind you, Essayas does not like us more than he likes Meles, no matter how much they hate each other. Their hatred is temporary while with us it radical.
