ESFNA teams rally behind Birtukan vote

The Ethiopian Sports Federation in North America (ESFNA) is engulfed in a controversy after its Woyanne-infested 9-member executive committee has tried to reverse the 27-member board’s decision to invite Birtukan Mideksa as a guest of honor.

As reported earlier (see here), majority of the ESFNA board voted by a wide margin to invite Birtukan, which was violently opposed by Al Amoudi stooges Sebsebe Assefa, Ayaya Arega, and Endale Turfa. At one point, Sebsebe and Ayaya threatened to physically attack delegates from the Los Angeles Abebe Bikila and the Maryland St. Mikael teams who presented the proposal. When the chair, intimidated by Al Amoudi thugs, hesitated to allow a vote, five of the 27 teams walked out. At which point, the chair gave in and allowed a vote to take place. The result was 12 to 8 in favor of Birtukan. If the five teams who walked out in protest are counted, the total number of teams who are in favor of Birtukan are 17 out of the 27.

The next day after the vote, Al Amoudi servants (ashkeroch) regrouped and forced the executive committee to reverse the board’s decision.

Flush with money looted from Ethiopia by Al Amoudi, the executive committee is preparing to file a law suit against Ethiopian Review and also to launch a public relations campaign to sell its frivolous argument that ESFNA cannot get involved in politics by inviting a politician. What they conveniently forget is that on more than one occasion ESFNA had invited a political figure as a guest of honor. The involvement of Al Amoudi and Woyanne agents in the ESFNA itself is highly political. On top of that, some of the executive committee members, such as Endale Turfa, are Woyanne activists who organize events on behalf of the Meles junta.

Some members of the teams whose delegates voted NO to Birtukan’s invitation told Ethiopian Review today that they are terribly disappointed at the decision of their representatives.  Most members of the ESFNA teams are patriotic Ethiopians who oppose the executive committee’s relations with the Woyanne junta and Al Amoudi. The ESFNA Executive Committee is actually a toothless body that is bossed around by Al Amoudi’s top aid Abnet GebreMeskel and his gang of thugs led by Ayaya, Arawit, and Sebsebe.

Here is how the ESFNA teams stand on the Birtukan invitation:

  1. If what is reported is the case, we got to be very proud of the decision of ESFNA. Thank you all who voted for Birtukan. Thank you Seattle for the 100% Vote! Those who oppose got to be grilled by thier cities.

  2. But now you must be careful that your actions don’t draw attention from the IRS or cause you to lose your exempt designation.

Following are the activities that could cause your organization to lose its tax-exempt position:

A nonprofit differs from a for-profit organization in that it does not benefit the private interests of any individual or organization. A nonprofit organization must serve the public good. Profits are not paid to individuals but channeled back into the organization’s activities. We know how much ESFNA’s board members benefited personally.

Lobbying: ESFNA is lobbing for Woyanne-

Political campaign activity Esfna is involved in political activities

Activities that generate too much : Most of ESFNA incomes are generated from Alcohol and concert fees.

  3. The Atlanta agent Endale Tufer is an enigmatic person who ended up in the federation despite his lack of education and enlightenment. He can not even write a paragraph, he is unable to read and comprehend any thing in English. Yet he has been envolved with this federation for along time.

  4. Arawit ( Demis ) what a shame! The guy is a moron who can’t write his own name properly. I doubt if he could be able to spell his name. Unfortunately these kinds of people always are easy targets for immoral acts.

They got no brain, only big bellies.

I know Mengistu Yilma at Balcha Hospital in Addis, he was just a driver there. And Demis ( arawit ) was simply a vagabond from his early days. He was selling news paper and later he played football. No school, nothing – So what do we expect from such people? they don’t have the capcity to feel the pain of the Ethiopian people, period!

  5. ESFNA is servant of its stockholders teams and public. If the current structure is irrelevant the majority could change the venue until the disagreement could be resolved through legal means. It has been sometimes since Los Angeles hosted the game. Let the twenty-seven play next game in Los Angeles. Ten teams members who were misrepresentatives of their team will go to hell. The current corrupted and Woyane infiltrated EC could be made irrelevant. New ESFNA with new EC could represent the public wish. If you look at sport events through history including the one that was concluded this year in South Africa had public figures as gusts. President Nelson Mandela was at the closing ceremony. We must not allow Woyanes to dictate us using its foreign department. We must have our lady liberty.

  6. I’ve got the information that “Sakharov prize”
has gone to “Breaking the Silence” group.
    Source: National Review Online –

But Birtukan is/will be remembered as finalist of the “Sakharov Prize” named after the russian space scientist and human rightist.

As of ESFNA, it is a test to this Federation.
Woyanes sterecch their tentacles in every spheres of life. The minorty complex of this thugs has no end. They want to pollute with their dirty fingures every where. That is the main problem and great obstacle Woyane is doing.

But truth and tenacity prevails at the end.

  7. Nowadays, everything is political, and it is the responsibility of each one of us to examine and research everything about the association and organization before becoming a member. In the case of ESFNA, I am very disappointed not only with the Ethiopian board members, but all the rest of non-woyane Ethiopians that participate with ESFNA knowing it is funded by Almoudi and run by members of TPLF. Ethiopians beware and don’t indirectly align yourselves with the bloody hand Melese and have the blood of your Ethiopian brothers and sisters on your hands.

  8. Number 2, the truth, you don’t seem to have any grip about the tax-exempt regulation of the IRS. Let me make it clear to you and everyone who is reading this.

    2. What evidence do you have to suggest that ESFNA is a nonprofit organization.

    2. Brtukan is not a citizen running for federal office here in the United States nor she is an American.

    3. Under the Internal Revenue Code, all section 501(c)(3) or other tax exempt status other than 501(c)(3)organizations are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office. Contributions to political campaign funds or public statements of position (verbal or written) made on behalf of the organization in favor of or in opposition to any candidate for public office clearly violate the prohibition against political campaign activity. Violating this prohibition may result in denial or revocation of tax-exempt status and the imposition of certain excise taxes.

    4. Invitation to a sport event is NOT a political even and even if it is, Bertukan is not running for any federal office in the U.S.

    5. Finally, if ESFNA chooses to engage in a limited political activity here in the U.S., it can have other form of (501)(c)tax-exempt status other than 501(c)(3).
So your comment was baseles and does not hold water and you should research before you say anyting you don’t have a clue.

As for my comment on the issue, I care less one way or the other since I’m not a political person.

  9. shame on those voted against birtukan, Now it is time for ethiopians to react and make critical measures against the corrupted leaders of ESFNA, as a result those team members whom name is listed against birtukan the players should say no to the decission that is made by thier team representaitve and those ethiopians around North America should write, email, and call the corrupted members of ESFNA and let them know that ESFNA is not a poperty of a few individuals but a property of ethiopians in NA, as a result if needed the ESFNA bad members should replaced by a concerned and good ethiopians….acutally i have made several attempt to reach out the ESFNA puplic relation via email where I have never received any response…shame on those ESFNA members that serves weyane especially the notorious hodam Endale who is known as a weyane servant for a little while….and hodams shame on you!

  10. thanks St, Mikeal, Unity DC, Virginia lions and all true Ethiopians to vote Bertukan. She is the first woman of the party leader that encourage our sisters that is not poltice to vote Bertukan. True Ethiopians who play for Dc Ethiopian stars please ,move to other team (St. Mikeal and other).

    IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE 10/20/10

In the past couple of days some websites have carried stories with regards to our recently concluded Board of Directors meeting. In the interest of clarifying possible misunderstandings and setting the record straight ESFNA is releasing this press release.

ESFNA’s Board of Directors presented Judge Birtukan Mideksa to be our guest of honor, in the cultural category, at our October 17, 2010 meeting in Atlanta, GA. Other Board of Directors suggested that Judge Birtukan’s nomination goes against our by-law since she is a leader of a political organization. Judge Birtukan’s popularity was evident at the meeting and a spirited discussion took place. Since ESFNA prides itself to be a democratic organization and there was a nomination on the floor, a vote was taken and Judge Birtukan’s nomination narrowly passed. However, in keeping with the non-political, non-religious and non-ethnic policy of ESFNA and also keeping in mind our non-profit status, which prohibits a non-profit organization from having any kind of political affiliation, some senior Board of Directors implored and urged the Board to review the decision. After another round of heated and emotional discussion, the Board of Directors who supported the nomination withdrew their support. As a democratic organization with internal and external rules to follow, ESFNA chose to stick to its core principal of being non-political.

ESFNA regrets any misunderstanding our decision might have caused to the public or our supporters.

    Thank you,

  12. ESFNA, has to be reorganized democratically. Leaders must be voted in and out of office with the full free will of the people.
Long time friends, families, sport heroes who have positions them selves as leaders should resign immediately.
People have the right to choose the leaders of their organization. ESFNA have to understand this and organize an election all over the UNITED STATES immediately.
Let people choose who to invite as gust speaker.

  13. If ESFNA is a 501c3 organization it is therefore a public organization, therefore, transparency is mandated by Law, ESFNA must make the Minutes of the vote for and against Birtukan invitation public….ESFNA is accountable to the community that has been supporting it for the last 25 years

  14. #11. Do your homework first ESFNA is a non profit tax exempt organization. I support ESFNA to invite Birtuka. My message to ESFNA is when your receive Al-Amoudie money did you realize you were violating the tax exempt status. If ESFNA did not invite Birtukan we have enough evidence to report them to IRS
Check IRS website to find out ESFNA’S STATUS.
    #15 I WAS AGAINST AL-AHMOUDIE TOO.
#16 ESFNA IS UNDER IRS INVESTIGATION

  15. Elias;
Do you know, if what KUSH wrote above is true? If it is true, I urge Ethiopians seriously consider boycotting this year’s event. We should not align ourselves with traitors.

  16. Some who comment here do not seem to understand the basics that humans living in the west are expected to know.
Endale Tufar or Arawit do not need to speak, write, or understand the English language to serve in the capacity they are involved in ESFNA.

Even if this allegation is true, which I don’t beleive so, to make the knowledge of English a test for a position in an Ethiopian non profit organization would send a bad message to the multitudes in our community and set a terrible precedent. These guys are accused of doing bad things enough to make them reconsider their decisions on this case without an additional allegation. So lets refrain from unnecessary accusations.

  17. Now,the north american sports federation crossed moral boundry by reversing it’s decision not to honor the prominent civil right activist Birtukaun Midekssa. So there is no soccer festval in 2011 in Atlanta unless it is over our dead body.I personal started to day at where I work and pay the tax for the county government where I work and where the federation has leased the soccer field.Ya all do your historical effort.

  18. IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE 10/20/10

ESFNA regrets any misunderstanding our decision might have caused to the public or our supporters.

    Thank you,

Why is that, the reverse vote was needed. Birtukan was nominated, then seconded and voted by the board. That is it. Everything ends there. why conduct another vote? Sometimes you do not get what you want in democracy? but the majority decision is the final decision. WOW! I was expecting a better explanation…” a narrow majority?????..
You still need to respect the first vote and invite Birtukan as a gust of honor. She deserve to be here with us and it will give us a chance to say thank you for her sacrifice…anyway, Birtukan will be with us ! and we will honor her!

  19. It is the style of the spineless: “እኛ እናቃለን”: “እኛ የለንበትም”: “እኛ አያገባንም”… “እኛ + BS. There are Ethiopian radio stations who would declare “This is not a partisan show”, “We do not take sides”, and “We are not into politics”. They are all the same animals: just like rats, squirrels and possum and other rodents, although they appear the different to the eye, heredity wise, they are from the same family. In an era where all sorts of foreigners own and run Ethiopia and where the strange rulers have turned the country inside out, labeling Birtukan Medeksa, a woman who has done her share of bravery, as a controversial politician is very questionable.

  20. This is TPLF aka ERPDF aka Woyane making yet another move to bring under control a “diaspora” institution for its purposes. Fortunately, nothing can be hidden from the public for too long with sharp sources of news like ER (thank you Elias).

I do wonder how long before ESFNA “outlaws” the plain green, yellow, red flag and replace it by the one with the TPLF mark in the middle.

I absolutely appreciate those who stood for the invitation of Birtukan, our hero. It is good to see there are individuals with unwavering moral stature. On the other hand, the rhetoric, as explained by the “press release” from TPLF/EPRDF is exactly the game we saw played again and again.
    1. Try to trap as many ESFNA members with money as possible
    2. Play with words to try and confuse the public (read their press release)while all along sounding legitimate (“we won 97% of the seats not the votes” vs their stand on the press release)
    3. Drown online discussion forums (anywhere one is able to comment) with fake comments voting against the invitation of Birtukan. This is to influence the opinions of the naive.

I am afraid it may be too late to directly bring control of ESFNA under our (diaspora) hand. As TPLF sees the importance of this organization, they will not let go. So the question is, is it better to start thinking about boycotting the event UNLESS Birtukan is invited?

Elias, lately you have been active to bring us actionable information. Thank you.

  21. I beg everybody to contribute what ever they can to the ethiopian review so that it will continue to expose these lunatics who are raping our country.Lets help Ethiopian review.Every penny count

  22. To begin with, how come an organization with many years in existence brings items for a vote without exhaustive discussion that may violate its own by laws?
How come no one points the issue violates the bylaws (IF it violates) and the final vote is taken and be known to the public informally through Ethiopian Review, then turn around and reverse the decision implying it violates the bylaws?

It simply indicates a number of things.

    • The board/executive committee has no knowledge of the rules and regulations of the org, and therefore do not deserve to be on those leadership roles.

    • The incapability of the leadership team to manage its own business and lack vote of confidence among its members and the general public.

    • Play with emotion of the community it intends to serve in this very sensitive matter that’s close to most people.

    • Birtukan’s issue is not a political issue, it’s a HUMAN RIGHTS issue and she just happens to be a leader of an opposition party. This directly/indirectly indicates the influence being put by the EPRDF and supporters not to associate Birtukan with the soccer tournament as a guest of honor.

    • The press release by ESFNA indicates a “… narrowly passed…” what kind of justification is this? What else do you want? If it was defeated, that was a dead issue. When it is passed, it is passed and accept it, as you claim to be a democratic organization. You can’t have the cake and eat it too.

    • It all shows in many ways the few incompetent people hovering in this organization and driving the organization to be a tool for a very few.

    • “Nobody will abuse you without your consent”, therefore, if we let them abuse us as they did in many occasions, they will continue to do so. This should not be tolerated and a concerted effort should be made to counter for this unacceptable action.

Please voice your opinions and let the board/EC know your feelings. There is always a price to be paid, even for ignorance.

    Longlive Freedom of press!

  23. The board members do not know how to write their name. The website and the PR letters are done by paid professionals. This are mafia group. They new how weak our community is. If we all sign a petition to IRS. They will be destroyed .hey do not have a moral value. They are their for personal profit in the name of non profit.

  24. Ethiopians has been giving the benefit of the doubt on ESFNA stand for the past 7 years. They have tried to convince us Ala moudi is Saudi citizen a none political man while wearing Woyanes T shirt or Malaya in public and funded ESFNA but, this time they are clearly showed their side of the reality which is anti Ethiopian and a TPLF tugs or HODAMS. We Ethiopians will Boycott Atlanta’s Game unless all anti Ethiopia and anti Birtukan Elements are out of ESFNA. I encourage all team not to participate in 2011 games. Most board members would like to invite and voted for Birtukan, they did not vote for Kinijit or Andenet.

  25. Ethiopians: the power is in your hands. ESFNA is nothing without the majority of Ethiopians. Let ESFNA know that–Birtukna is more than any random political figure, she is our Ethiopian Nelson Mandela, a symbol of freedom, equality and struggle for all Ethiopians over TPLF oppression.

  26. We need to teach lesson to these ignorants by not attending the 2011 festival. Fellow Ethiopians, it would be a big insult to the rest of us if we conviniently ignore their action and give them financial support by buying tickets. We can go to Atlanta but, DO NOT buy tickets to attend the games or any events. These idiots should pay the hard way.

  27. It is just stupid! If they consider her as a political leader or she is politician, why did they cast their vote in the first place? After they lost? I and the whole my family actually boycotted this organization since Washington (the 25 round). That time also they begged us on Thursday with all radio show to forgive them for what they did (Alamudi case). But right after the tournament finished on Sunday, they pretend or said “we didn’t ask anyone for forgiveness”. Friends and family we get together every year we will do that too as usual but not to their music hall or to their soccer field, I don’t think ever will do that with these thugs.

  28. Sorry for those Bandas, Woyane and its co.will fall one day it is a matter of time. I appericiate those who vote for Birtukan, can you see how she compte in the workd not this tyoe of yours sporting, People of ethiopia has to decide not to particpate, we can orgnaize new team

  29. I have lived in LA for 25 years and I have played for Abebe Bikila – Los Angeles. I am glad I picked the right team. LA stars and Dallol players have no balls and I mean that literally. You bring shame to our city!

  30. Who are those aggregating in or around Addis – Dallas team and are betraying the interest of the Ethiopians in Dallas and its vicinity and the Ethiopian people at large? Please let us know who they are by name (the enemy from the inside) so that we will expose them absolutely naked and disgrace them for life.

After all, who wants to be represented by such individuals? If there is one, it must be the Woyanes and Woyane servers/lovers, right?

We shall win, we shall overcome!!!!

PS:- Please read Ephrem Madebo’s article on ESFNA. Open your eyes, look around and stop giving deaf-ears to the reality/truth on the ground!!!

  31. I for one am very disappointed by the position that the ESFNA took on this matter.

Once a Board Member of the ESFNA, I am compelled to speak up on matters of this nature. It is appropriate for the Federation to honor all those giant men and women in the Sport world. Sport is one area that contributes to the development of Ethiopians. The nation has to be in harmony for sport or any other cultural activity to continue inside or outside the country. The Federation had recognized its essential roles in the well being and liberty of the people at Home just as it would be in the liberty of fellow Ethiopians in the Diaspora. It may not organize political rallies to show its objection on behalf of the people, but recognizing those special national figures who sacrificed their lives for the liberty of Ethiopians is perfectly within its unavoidable duty. Secondly, we cannot forget the fact that the majority of Ethiopians in the Diaspora and those who established the ESFNA are exilees and former victims of brutal dictators and they have duty and obligation to show their support to the people and beloved ones they left behind who are still suffering in the hands of the brutal regime.

There were a few in the Federation back then who objected the nomination of Prof. Asrat on the basis that the Federation is mixing sport with politics. These are not people concerned about the Federation and the fans and the teams. These are individuals with soft heart for the dictator. These may be part and parcel of the regime directly or indirectly benefiting for the situations in Ethiopia. They have no voice and should not be given a platform to voice their subdued consciences about the suffering of Ethiopians and the action of brave men and women. The Federation is not asked to organize political activity or support one. What the Federation wanted to do is recognize Ethiopians of rare contributions to the nation. The Federation accepted this notion and appropriately honor Prof. Asrat. Judge Birtukan was nominated again appropriately by the Federation in accordance to their voting procedures. What made it repulsive is the act of a few who wanted to reverse the decision. That indicated the presence of the dictator’s influences and men around. There is no choice, but adhere to the wise decision of consciences the Federation already has passed.

Obviously, there are few individuals who do not appreciate what Her Excellency Judge Bertukan Mideksa stood for. I must express my regret that they undermined the bold and brave political figure that Ethiopia gave birth to since Tayitu. That is a curse!

Judge Birtukan put her life in close proximity of death on more than two occasions in defense of Ethiopia and its people. How sad that these do-nothing represent the consciences of hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians and act on their behalf with such blindness to history and in absolute contradiction to the belief and principle that make Ethiopians as Ethiopians? If Ethiopia does not exist, there will be no Ethiopian sport, Ethiopian cultural thing and anything Ethiopian. If Ethiopia does not exist, we have to find common things that binds us gather to celebrate an occasion and that will not be in the name of Ethiopia. Without the brave Ethiopians who defended its existence in every struggle and aggression, today we would have not be celebrating our heritages. That is what Birtukan Mideksa fought for to preserve Ethiopia and prevent the disintegration of Ethiopia. We are exceptionally lucky to have the opportunity to honor Judge Birtukan.

When Prof. Asrat was nominated for the same honor, there were some who objected the nomination. I had an opportunity to speak against those who opposed, and in the end they did not matter for individuals like Berhanu, Akalu, Tesfaye, Shemelis, Sebsebe, Indale, Abdela, Desalegn and many others rose to support the nomination. I do not know what happened to my friends still around this time. In any case, even after such sad affairs, I have no doubt that they will honor Birtukan Mideksa seeing the honor as their honor to approve the nomination of Judge Birtukan.

God Bless Ethiopians and ESFNA will celebrate its 50th year as it did it 25th year. That is a spectacular mile stone!

  32. 501(c)3 Tax exemption law is created for American Politician. This Restriction would not make Judge Birtukans presence at ESFNA a vote for me campaign to become a US president or a Senate. In fact Almoudis donation of 300,000 Dollar a few years back might indirectly be, money ESFNA received to Lobby Ethiopian in diaspora in support of Woyane.

*-We demand a resignation of all board members who voted against Birtukans Presence in Atlanta.

“Under the Internal Revenue Code, all section 501(c)(3) organizations are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office.

Certain activities or expenditures may not be prohibited depending on the facts and circumstances. For example, certain voter education activities (including presenting public forums and publishing voter education guides) conducted in a non-partisan manner do not constitute prohibited political campaign activity. In addition, other activities intended to encourage people to participate in the electoral process, such as voter registration and get-out-the-vote drives, would not be prohibited political campaign activity if conducted in a non-partisan manner.

On the other hand, voter education or registration activities with evidence of bias that (a) would favor one candidate over another; (b) oppose a candidate in some manner; or (c) have the effect of favoring a candidate or group of candidates, will constitute prohibited participation or intervention.

The Internal Revenue Service provides resources to exempt organizations and the public to help them understand the prohibition. As part of its examination program, the IRS also monitors whether organizations are complying with the prohibition.
