Birtukan to be released tomorrow

A press conference is scheduled for tomorrow by Prof. Ephraim Isaac and other members of the elders committee regarding the release of Birtukan Mideksa, a {www:political prisoner} and chairperson of the opposition Unity for Democracy and Justice Party (UDJ) of Ethiopia.

Sources in Addis Ababa have confirmed to Ethiopian Review that Birtukan’s family have picked up her belongings from Kality prison today. The family is also preparing a welcoming ceremony. A lot of people are seen today going in and out of her family {www:residence} .

  1. There should be fund raising to send her money so that she does not have to suffer with poverty.

    I think Professor Al and you should work towards that. The process should be transparent so TPLF does not use the event to further divide the people.

  4. Congrats Birtukan ,her family and everyone ..she shouldn’t have been jailed in the first place. But It looks like that EPRDF is doing this to divert people’s attention from the stupid cabinet forming news. I hate these game of EPRDF that they take what you have and give it back after a while and make you feel they did something good. Whatever the case i am so happy especially for your kid and mom.

  8. I am happy for her child and Mother who unlike the rest if us suffered the absence of their loved one for so long…… With that said, I hope this release does not by no means compromises her firm stand. I doubt TPLF would release her with out a clause to yap about…

  9. It is a good news but shouldn’t be considered as a favour from the unfavourable weyane. Weyane knows that Birtukan was a unifying figure in a country that is ruled by dividing the people overtly and covertly. So weyane had to invent an excuse. If we all remember Birtukan and her collegues were imprisoned for a laughable trumped up charge of attempting to overthrow the illigitimate self imposed weyane tick from power and attempted genocide. Kinijit had already defeated weyane at the ballot and has no power to overthrow the criminal gangs by force as the opposition has no guns while weyane is armed to it’s teeth. The charge don’t hold water but the world knew it was only a trumped up charge to divide & weaken the opposition , yet Meles was the guest of honour at the G8 meeting in Gleanigles only days after hiscagazi gangs run riots to massacre innocent and peaceful Ethiopians in the streets of Addis Ababa. The opposition was weakened, intimidated & persecuted to a point that weyane claimed to have won over 99% of the ballot 5 years later. You only have to be ChiraQ to commit such wanton crime in broad day light. Now weyane wants to be praised for releasing Birtukan who shouldn’t have been jailed in the first place. It is indeed fantastic to see. Birtukan free once again. She paid a price for trying to unify Ethiopians and give them hope. I’ m so happy for her daughter who was brutally denied of her mother.
    God bless all those who fought and advocated for Birtukan’s release.

  10. Wro Bertukan would be conditionally free but I hope this time she knows her limit, the application of the law and the nature of politics. Before any political ambition I think she must fully understand and have refined stances. It was the sacrifices of many that gave her political rights. It just did not drop from the heavens.
    She was dead wrong to say what she did in response to the haters in Sweden. Now that she has spent almost 2 years behind bar, I assume that she has matured enough to respect the law and become accountable to words that come out of her mouth. She should abstain from wanting the approval of the haters as that has been the ones that made he go to Qaliti.
    I am sure once again – Bertukan will repent her sins, show genuine remorse using explicit words, ask the people and government of Ethiopia for forgiveness and promise to firmly protect the constitution. It is not the TOXIC part of the diaspora nor the foreign personalities that secured her freedom but the good intention and magnanimity of the government.

  11. Melles used Birtukan as a bargaining tool to receive more deadly aid from his western patrons. Mark my words; the US state department and the EU will praise him for releasing Birtukan and shower him with their deadly aid so he can buy more weapons to kill innocent Ethiopians who are saying enough is enough and have taken arms to get this tribal regime off their backs.

    Ethiopians should not be decieved by this latest trick, they should keep their eyes on the prize, unite and bring an end to this nightmare of a regime. Ethiopians in the diaspora should concentrate their energy in exposing this fascist regime for what it is and not be decieved by these kinds of tricks anymore. We all know the Melles regime would not stay a month in power without the backing of his masters, so Ethiopians in the diaspora should expose this regime relentlessly to the people of the west.

I know how difficult for most of us who care about our country and people the imprisioment of this bright women. Imagin also her mother and her daughter that has undergo the suffering. I would say, Woyane for whatever reason you did one good thing now. I know aything can be changed. Just leason the people, not your hot temper racist mood.     As soon as Birtukn gets released, I hope she hires a law firm that represents people around the world and sue tyrant Melese at International Court of Justice.
    We shall not rest until the rest of the political prisoners released from jail.
    Elias, please try to get the names of the political prisoners who are rotting in jail, I know it is impossible to get the names of the hundreds of thousands of innocent Ethiopians that are locked in, but please do whatever you can. I am very much convinced that all the letters that flooded University of Columbia has a lot to do with Birtukan’s release. All Ethiopians who have written letters should be very proud.
    I urge every Ethiopian to continue the fight until all the innocent Ethiopian prisoners are released and be with their families. The abuse of Melese must be exposed and be known around the world. The struggle must continue!

Good God, ER… thank you thank you thank you… for being a bearer of this good news.. i was starting to lose hope.. but this this.. something we all need.. just a break for a while… a light at the end of the tunnel!!!! i cann’t describe what i felt , but its a lot of tears and mixed feelings; shouldn’t have been jailed in the first place; but what can you do with a blind coward dictator? he jailed her cause he knows if she is out there; his election will become a turmoile again, people would have wanted the figure they trust to lead them… she now has to go out of the country and joing the struggle.. no point doing any peace talk with him.. he is already tightening his grip on power!

I am glad she is out but every one should know that from the beginnig it was a planned game by Meles to avoid problem. He is a very cruel creature and also proofing it time after time.     I am glad she gets back to her lovely baby. Why not capture the criminal dictator and place him in the same cell where Birtukan have been and ask him as to how it feels to be there?

    How else can the cunning dictator keep tightening his brutal grips on power that does not at all belongs him and keep milking material and financial resources while we are chanting and dancing about the magical “lady Liberty” soon coming to deliver Ethiopians from their endless miseries. Now that he did put 99.6% of the votes in his pockets, organized his ONE MAN rubber stamp parliament and the fake executive branch as his 100% ONE MAN dictator exclusive private property, then even according to plan he has other kinds of card games to follow from there, say, such as his Columbia adventure that unexpectedly went wrong followed by the release of the LADY WHO SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN IN JAIL even for a second.

    Now that the power game party is over he can release the lady and win media propaganda for his cruelty which he may turn around and call it humility like always.

    With what kinds of lousy mafia tricks and acrobats is he still going to make the poor Ethiopians dance naked in the rain while waiting the imaginary manna from the heavens through the intermediary of “lady liberty” or the dictator’s known cruelty?

    When Melees was asked about Birtukan at the event in Columbia University, he said she will ask for pardon and the government will pardon her again when she asks for it. He said something to that nature. But it is not secret; he planned for this long time ago. I may add it was crooked but, it was well sought-out plan. He was waiting to finish his fake election first to he releases her. Now she is not a treat to his administration in fact he will again good international publication. For Ethiopians, you may as well stop asking westerners to put pressure on him because don’t think he is releasing her because of pressure, but he did it for pure political gain.

I am a little surprised that we in the so called opposition don’t really get it, that if Birtukan had been in prison for years to come she might actually had been someone different than she went in maybe and she might have been BIRTUKAN. Mandella turned MANDELLA after 27 years of prison in which the apartheid state only let so little information about him that ,if what i heard was true, there was only 3 pictures of him released in all that time. so technically, the apartheid state is credited for turning him into a living myth, a hero hidden from his people that if they let him out things would change for the better once and for all.That is how Mandella was made and so would have been BIRTUKAN. Apparently u don’t know this trick and only the meles does. So while you are cheering on her release melese creats and destroys birtukan, and this if at all she ever made herself. I warn you that the same trick killed your one time hero-teddy.

    melese is not going to arrest nor kill anyone to glorify their role that it threatens his stature.(Get it)

  29. Alhamdulillah!!! As a father of a daughter of almost the same age also a grandfather, I don’t want to see our daughter Birtukan separated from her daughter one more day this way. I have had her in my prayers day and night since she has been in prison. Allah has worked through this priceless elder of ours, Professor Ephraim, to let the cries of an innocent child pleasantly answered. I can see how her daughter will jump up and down when she sees her mom out of prison and at home for the first time in several months. Alhamdulillah!!!! Allah (God) is always great, omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent!!!!

  34. There is no doubt this is a game. I am sure the rumor of her release is to test how we react.

    Eitherway, I think the best way to f** up Woyane’s plan is to hold a fund raiser in every public gathering place (churchs, schools, restaurants…etc) and send the money to her. That will really screw TPLF very badly.

    p.s. becareful how the fund raising is conducted though because the TPLF can hijack the process and end up diving the people.

Here is what he thought in his stupid mind “I will arrest Birtukan who is my formidable and fierce opponent until I rigged and win by 96%because she is a formidable opponent. I will sentence her for life just so I can raise the level of fear. Once I win the election, she is no longer relevant and I will be seen as a merciful in the eyes of the west for letting go one who is accused of treason. I will beg them and kiss their ass so I can get a little bit of aid to support my followers ” This man thinks that Ethiopians and the west are stupid enough to fall in his un sophisticated stone aged mentality.
