Memher Zebene, the charlatan preacher who has been causing havoc at the MedhaneAlem Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Maryland, has finally succeeded this Sunday in taking over the church.
In the period leading up to Sunday’s vote, Zebene and friends have waged an aggressive “election campaign” like a politician. In their dirty campaign, one of the tactics they used was to intimidate and chase away several long time members of the church.
In the first place, the election it self is illegal since according to a long standing Ethiopian Orthodox Church rule, a new head of church cannot be chosen while incumbent head is alive. MedhaneAlem Church’s head is sick but still alive. To Zebene and his cult-like group of blind followers the church’s rule is meaningless.
Even after such a dirty campaign full of intimidation, where the church’s membership has dwindled down to less than 300, he has received only 190 votes. Many have decided not to participate in the illegal voting and 69 voted against him. With this many long time members of the church opposing him, Zebene cannot be a legitimate head of the church even if the voting is legal. If he has any semblance of integrity and care for the church’s well-being, he would not have dragged it through such ugly fight.
But as I stated in the past, Zebene is not a religious leader. He is a vainglorious cult leader and a thug who has no respect for Ethiopian Orthodox Church traditions and the Church’s elders and scholars.
His rude behavior toward elder church members, fellow preachers, as well as any one who questions him is appalling. A couple of years ago he even threatened to physically attack Addis Dimts Radio host Abebe Belew while he was on air.
In teaching the Bible, he some times makes up his own story. One time while preaching he said Ethiopia’s Queen Saba spoke with King Solomon in Amharic.
There are close to a hundred Ethiopian church in North America. All most all of them are providing needed spiritual service to their members with little or no controversy. These churches are being led by great, selfless Ethiopians who have no interest in profiting from the churches they are elected to lead. Unfortunately there are a couple of church such as MedhaneAlem of Maryland who are being hijacked by charlatans.

Why do you sound so angry? I think you are very bitter because we at Debere Genet Medhanealem exercised our right, and elected our head of our Church. You are angry because evil’s work was exposed and God’s work has prevailed. At different times, you called our Memher different names. Today’s was ‘charlatan.’ You never cease to amaze me. Obviously, you have no respect to our Church or the people inside. Even by your count, 190 people elected him to lead the Church. Does that mean anything to you and/or your likes? If you are a “journalist” as you often claim, why do fail to show objectivity? For many of us, it is obvious you have something against Memeher Zebene. I know what I wrote will not change you, but I have responsibility to tell the truth. The Church has a democratic process, and democracy prevailed, as it always does. I know it is very hard for you to swallow it. But it is a fact. Live with it. We are very happy to know our Memeher will continue to lead us for many more years, as he has been for the last few years. The vote was an affirmation of our undying support for our beloved Memeher. We don’t expect everybody to support him. But those of us who care about our Religion, our Church, our Country, our Culture, our Children, our Family will continue to stand by the side of Memeher Zebene Lemma, as we have been for the last nine years. I know the devil don’t like to see/hear that. But it is God’s will. If it wasn’t God’s will, Memeher Zebene would have been disappeared by know. So much has been tried from inside and outside of the Church to discredit Memeher , but none of it has succeeded, because God is on the side of our Memeher.

Sad! Indeed! This failure is both a weakness of our church members and our naïve and immature youth who are simply blind folded by a stupid so called spiritual political approach of Zebene, as I talked to a number of these youth around Washington, DC that not only attends his preaching classes but also worship Zebene. Many youth that I have talked so far are simply don’t have no single tangible evidences to defend the naked crimes of zebene while they are simply carried over by his preaching talent which has nothing to do to its repeated crimes. It is very sad that to see that people like zebene and other selfish power and money mongers are taking over our respected religion. These naïve youth are simply have a raped mind where they never try to see the ground realities while they keep worshiping Zebene. These young Ethiopians are running many days commenting nothing against his personal stand while they keep saying that they support him just because he is a good preacher. Come on guys! bend over and look at the ground to search the truth, and see if you can see it. But sometimes the problem with these youth is that, anyone who argued and opposes Zebene is automatically labeled and connected as PENTE.
It is the fundamental reason why and how Ethiopia is losing her respected real priests and bishops and why the illegal and criminal Aba paulos is still in power who is appointed by TPLF. It is due to liars like Zebene gaining space to fool the most ill informed youth in our history. You can see the result why Zebene is getting too many naïve followers regardless they hear him lying over and over in front of their eye and their ear. Oh My God! Oh My God! Wey Anchi Enate Betekristian! Listing to Zebene’s and followers still believing in him, I have never dreamed that I will see Ethiopians youth and some silver hair retiree stupid’s seeing them smelling Zebene’s stink for a long, long time. Sad! How can Ethiopians take these vagabond and selfish individuals that are profiting from our church who are lying from toe to teeth day in and day out as humble priests and religious leaders? How many foolish Ethiopians is this country to tolerate and for how long?

There is no any spiritual benefit to achieve by being a controversial head of a Church whose members are divided to accept a new leader while they still have an ailing priest. They can appoint an assistant priest to do the Church business until the previous Priest recuperates and gets well and comes back to do his duty.
I’m sure, the Medhanialem Church has a Church rule that clearly specifies about the hiring and firing of a new leader; if there is such a law in the Church, I think it is advisable for the members of the Medhanialem Church to follow their Church rules and regulations. I am tired of hearing unnecessary Church controversies within the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church. I am still in pain by the division of my Church, the Church that used to be under one patriarch, the Church that served the Ethiopian Christians with one voice, one message, and with confidence and complete dedication. These mundane priests, monks, and preachers are now tearing down the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church and splitting it into many divisions exactly like the Protestant Church.
At the beginning, there was only one Church: no Catholic Church, no Orthodox Church, and no Protestant Church. Starting from Pentecost on wards, the Church was emerging victorious and firmly asserting its position for over 1000 years as one Apostolic Church. Then greed for power and doctrinal differences split the Church in two: the Latin Church and the Eastern Church. The Church forgot what Jesus said: “Mat 20:27-28 (NEB) “…whoever wants to be great must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be the willing slave of all–like the Son of Man; He did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give up his life as a ransom for many.”
This split helped the Muhammadans, and the Church lost Syria, Palestine and Egypt to the invading Muslims who imposed Islam upon people by force.
In the same way, the split of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church between the Amhara Church and the Tegaru Church helps the Ethiopian Arab Muslims to spread their religion, Islam, all over Ethiopia and finally replace the Christian Kingdom with a Muslim kingdom as it happened to Syria, Palestine, and Egypt. The Ethiopian Muslims have now outnumbered the Ethiopian Christians; 50% of the Ethiopian parliament is composed of Muslims. After few years, the Ethiopian Churches and monasteries will be converted to Muslim Mosques and shrines; the Crescent will replace the Cross, the Imams the clergies, the Quran the Holy Bible, and the Caliphate the city of Addis Ababa. There will be no Christian schools for Christian children: all Ethiopian schools and universities will be filled by the Ethiopian Arab Muslim students. The Arabic language will replace the Amharic language, and every Ethiopian child will be forced to speak Arabic language. The Ethiopian Church Synodos will be replaced by the Islamic Sharia law that allows for every minor mistake that a person who did the mistake should be stoned to death or lose his/her hand or leg.
These are the situations waiting for Ethiopia unless we Ethiopian Christians disregard our differences and come together, work together, pray together and defend our faith from our arch and historical enemies, the Ethiopian Muslims. Our Christian fathers and mothers passed to us their faith in Jesus Christ by shedding their precious blood. Shouldn’t we respect and protect their indispensable heritage and pass it to our children?

The less we talk religion– we Ethiopians in America– the better we would be. The problem of Ethiopia and Ethiopians is not there are less of us we attend churches. I have heard of this man, Zebene. I have heard of the way he treats my aunts and uncles. His actions, and the actions of those who follow him, are not the actions of the peoples I have met from the Ethiopian Church. “Memher” implies “teacher”…Teacher of what?… discord? I have heard this man pocesses an artifact of historical nature stolen from the Ethiopian Church, Ethiopia itself, and its people (illegal under international and US law). This man is a thief of faith and of goods. This man’s action make him suspect. Is he a realitive of Meles and his thugs?

Unless one subscribes to the Woyane School of winning 99.9 percent of the vote, 190 to 69 definitely give you the mandate to lead the church and continue defending the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church.
The 69 people who voted against you have every right to do so. A true leader will engage the dissenters in a conversation, respect their views and ultimately win them back. We truly hope you will do so. Last but not least, don’t be distracted by the name calling, unfounded allegations and outright hatred directed at you. I agree what the writer of #3 explained. Those of you who do not belong to the MedhaneAlem Church are guided by inaccurate hear-say leading to insane conclusions and anger. You are hurting yourselves. Join the church, participate and make changes by a democratic process. Since most of you are afraid of being committed to any church, you stay out, complain and throw bitter words against strong supporters of the Eth. Orthodox church. (Tell me where else has there been such a process done in any Ethiopian Church?) Some of you do not even know that the church has by laws to be guided by; therefore you assume few individuals control the church. All members of the church should realize one important fact, Zebene is elected to be in charge of the Spritual (kahenat) only. According to the bi-laws of the church the Board of Trustees are the supreme authority. The board should treat him just like an employee. If he fails to do his job properly or violates the chirchs bi-laws such as the nutrality of the church they should carry out appropriate adminstrative actions.

One thing I noticed on the people who were happy with the outcome of the Sunday’s vote/election, they expressed their feelings in a very civilized manner. No personal attacks, no name callings, no disrespectufl words, no baseless accusations or character assassinations. They expressed their feelings in a way expected from a true Church goer. Kudos for them!
A lot had been said about Memeher Zebene, and the group that supported him. As I clearly believe Memeher Zebene is more than capable of defending himself, I will only write why we voted for Memeher Zebene. Why we supported him through thick and thin? and why we will continue to support him in the future?
To the contrary to some “people” here stated, we are not blind followers. Most of us are well educated, hold responsibilities in our respected fields, law abiding citizens, have love and respect for our elders, have undying love for our country, its cultures, its citizens and above all, a true love for our religion, Orthodox Tewahedo. Many of us were Orthodox by names but never practiced it. When asked about it, defensiveness and baseless arguments were what we used to do, until Memeher Zebene came to America. Thanks to our Mothers and fathers, sister and brothers at Debere Genet Medhanealem, they brought the man who possess a deep knowledge of our religion. More importantly, a man who can teach us in a way we can understand it. Nine years later, many of us are not what we were. We have a better understanding of our church and our religion. We don’t go the places we used to, our Church and its services comes before anything!. No, we are not perfect, as nobody is! But we learned a lot, changed a whole lot, and became better people with the help of Memeher Zebene’s Bible lesson. Many of us can stand up and testify, defend our church, quote Bible verses to make our points. No, we don’t insult people who disagree with us. We tell them the truth and try to bring them to our side. The days of being defensive and argumentative are behind us. With full confidence, we can stand and explain our religion. Thank God, you guys brought Memeher Zebene to our Chruch! Everybody should be happy with this phenomenon, except that person has a hidden agenda. What is so bad about people changing for the better, learning their religion, having a better appreciation of their religion, their culture and their country? Why do we hate the person (Memher Zebene) who brings people to the church and make them like their church, make them proud of their religion?
But there are people who are seriously unhappy with Memeher Zebene and his works. By the way, some say when he/she is against Memeher Zebene, he/she is labeled “pente”. As I disagree with an instant labeling of people, I also question the motive of people who attack an Orthodox Tewahedo preacher who teaches bible from our church’s perspective. Memeher’s teaching is bible, Memeher’s teaching is religion, Memeher’s teaching is Ethiopiawinet, Memeher’s teaching is Ethiopian culture, Memeher’s teaching is Ethiopian history…and what kind of people are against all these teachings? To go back to the Sunday’s vote, the vote is a reassurance to our Memeher to continue his good work. It is also a wake up call for many of us who have been bystanders. The day of looking from outside is over!!! We will get involve! We will volunteer more, we will give more money, we will do more membership drives, we will come up with ways to generate money to our church, we will start dialogue — discuss with people how we can learn from each other. We have a historical church that has many great people. Yes, we can learn a lot from them. We will also reach out to people who voted against Memeher, and see their points, we will talk to them. We will also talk to Memeher. As nobody is prefect, we will see if there are areas he can improve. We will talk to him how he lost those people. As long as there is no compromise to our religion, we always find him very easy to talk and have dialogue with.
We have to bring more people to our church. We shouldn’t feel threaten by the arrival of new people. Some feel the church is their fraternity or social gatherings. Some strictly come to church to socialize. As there is nothing wrong with making friends in church, the church is a house of God, and a place of worship, FIRST AND FOREMOST. So it has to be open for all!
I am very happy to be a member of Debergenet Medhanealm. It is a church unlike any other. Its democratic process can be an example to many churches around us.

የቤተክርስቲያንዋ መከፋፈል በውግዘት መለያየት ተጠቃሚዎች እርሱና መሰሎቹ ሆነዋልና። የኢ.ኦ.ተ. ቤ/ክር አንድ ከሆነች ሊቅውንተ ቤ/ክር ስለሚሰባሰቡና ፍቅር ሁሉን ስለሚገዛ ተራራ ነኝ ያለው ኩይሳም ስለማይሆን ጠላት ዲያብሎስም ስለሚያፍርና ጥቅም ስለሚቀር የቤተክርስቲያንዋን አንድነት አይወዱትም። ያልሆነ ስም ልጠፋና ስድብ ግን ይቀናቸዋል። ስድብ ባዶነት ነው።
ስድብ ከዲያብሎስ ጋር ሕብረት መፍጠር ነውና ልታቆም ይገባሃል! አደራችን የጌታችን የመድሃኒታችንን ኢየሱስ ክርስቶስ መስቀል እንጂ የመከፋፈልና የስድብ፣ የጩኽትና የልፍለፋ የመሳለቂያ የሥጋ ገበያ ሊሆን አይገባም እንልሃልን።
ኃይላችን ስለሆነው መስቀል ስናነሳ ጌታችን፣ መድኅኒታችንና Aምላካችን ኢየሱስ ክርስቶስ መከራን በመቀበል በመስቀል ላይ ባፈሰሰው ደም ሰላምን እንዳወጀልን ሁሉ አባታችን ኢትዮጵያዊ ሰማዕቱ ቅዱስ አቡነ ጴጥሮስም የእምነት የተዋህዶ አርበኛ ስለ እምነቱና ስለውድ ሃገሩ ኢትዮጵያ፣ ከአምላኩ እንዳየው መስቀሉን እንደጨበጠ ጠላትን በመገሰፅና በማውገዝ በባንዳዎች ትብብር በጨካኞች እጅ ተረሽኗል። ጌታችን በመስቀሉ ዲያብሎስን እንደገደለና እንዳሸነፈ ሰማእቱ ኢትዮጵያዊ ጴጥሮስም በመስቀሉ ፋሽስትን ገደለና አሸነፈ። የእዛ የእምነት ፅናት የተዋህዶ አርበኝነት ምልክት ቅርስ መሆኑ ተዘንግቶ “በእከከኝ ልከክልህ” የስጋ ገበያ ለከንቱ ውዳሴ በአባ ቀውስጦስ አማካይነት ለዘበነ (መምህር) በመሰጠቱን ከዚህ በፊት እንዲመለስ በየጊዜው በኢንተርኔት ከአገሪቱ ዜጎች መጠየቁን እኛም እንደ ኢትዮጵያዊ ዜግነታችን የሃገር ቅርስ በመሆኑ ያንገበግበናልና በአስቸኳይ ያለቅድመ ሁኔታ መመለስ አልበት። ግልሰቡ አልወሰደም እንዳይባል አፍ ሲያመልጥ እንዲሉ “ለሰርጌ መመረቂያ ከአባ ቆውስጦስ ተሰጥቶኛል” በማለት በደብረ ገነት መድኃኔዓለም ቤተክርስቲያን ሲመጻደቅ የተናገረውን ማውጣት ይቻላል።
የአባ ቆውስጦስ ስጦታ ቤተክርስቲያኒቱን ለሶስተኛ ሲኖዶስ አሳልፎ ለመስጠት የተደረገ ውስጣዊ ደባ ነው ሲሉ አንዳንድ የቤተክርስቲያኒቱ አባላት በጊዜው ሲናገሩ ተደመጠዋል። ታዲያ አንግዲህ ታላላቅ አባቶችን ሳያፍሩ “ሆዳሞች” ያሉና ያዋረዱ፣ ከሆዳሞች ያገኙትን ማረጋገጫ ያልቀረበበትን አለኝ የሚሉትን ክህነት እንዴት እንቀበለው? ስሊዚህ የኢትዮጵያ ቤ/ክር በቀደሙ አባቶች አማካይነት ተዋህዶ በቤዛነት ለሃገሯና ለዜጎቿ ለመላ የዓለም ክርስቲያን የተከፈለ የመስዋዕትነት ቋሚ ምስክር ነውና ዘበነ (መምህር) የመመለስ ኃላፊነትም ግዴታም አለብህ።
የተዋህዶ አርበኛ ሰማዕቱ አባታችን ቅዱስ ጴጥሮስ በምላስ፣ በልብስና በዘር ከፋፋይነት ሳይሆን የተመካው በጌታችን በመድኃኒታችን ኢየሱስ ክርስቶስ መስቀል ማለትም አንደቃሉ እኔስ ከጌታችን ከኢየሱስ ክርስቶስ መስቀል በቀር በሌላ ትምክህት ከእኔ ይራቅ (ገላ 6-14) ብሎ በዛች በመጨረሻዋ የጭንቅና ፈታኝ ሰዓት የክርስቶስን ዓርማ መስቀሉን መንፈሳዊ ክብሩን በቀኝ እጁ እንደጨበጠ ጽናትን አስከሞት ታላቅ ምስክርነቱን ስለኢትዮጵያ ስለህዝቡና ስለእምነቱ ደሙን በማፍሰስ ፍቅሩን የእግዚያብሔር ጽናቱን የገለጠበት የተሰዋውን የዛን የተዋህዶ አንበሳ መስቀል ለግል መውሰድና በማስኮብለል ከሀገር በማስወጣት ወደ ኪስ መክተት የመጨረሻ ነውርና ወደ ታች መዝቀጥ ነው። መመለሱ ግዴታ ነው። “ሀገሬ ኢትዮጵያ ሞኝ ነሽ ተላላ የሞተልሽ ቀርቶ የገደለሽ በላ” ካልሆነ በስተቀር አንተና መሰሎችህ በመጀመሪያ ገዝታችሁ ያንጠለጠላችሁትን መስቀል በቅጡ ያዙ! የሰማእቱን ፈለግ ተከተሉና ከከንቱ ውዳሴ ይልቅ እውነቱን የቤተክርስቲያን አንድነት ጩሁ። መጀመሪያ በዓለም ካለ ህይወት እንደ ሸራተን ከመሰለው ውጡ። አባታችን የተገኘው በመስቀሉ ስር ከቤተክርስቲያን አንጅ ሸራተን በሳንቲም መልቀሚያ ጉባዔ Aልነበረም።
ስለአባ እከሌ መኖር ይብቃችሁ። ነገሩ የእናንተ አባእገሌ ሆዳችሁ ጥቅማችሁ ነው። እስኪ የእውነት ሰው ሁኑና ስለ አገር የማይነገርበትና ከእውነት ከራቀው አደንቋሪ ጩኸት ውጡና ሰማእቱ ጴጥሮስን ልትሆኑት ባትችሉም መሰሉት። ይህ መስቀል እንዲመለስ ሕግም ያስገድዳል። ቅርስን መዝረፍና ለግል ማድረግ የማየገባውን ማድረግ ወንጀል ነውና!!! ምን ይታወቃል አሊያም አንድ ቀን እንደ ድንቅነሽ (ሉሲ) ታከራዩትና ገንዘብ ትሸቅጡበት ይሆናል። ሕዋርያው ቅዱስ ጳውሎስ ፊሊጶ 3-10 በመልእክቱ “የእነሱ መጨረሻ ጥፋት ነው፣ ሆዳቸው አምላካቸው ነው። ክብራቸው በነውራቸው ነው፣ አሳባቸው ምድራዊ ነው” እንዳለን መጨረሻቸው ጥፋት የሆነ የስም ክርስቲያኖች ፊሊጵ 3-10 ታንኩንና የመርዝ ጭሱን እየባረኩ በመላክ በባንዳዎች ትብብር ኢትዮጵያ ሀገራችንና ህዝቧን በወረሩበት በዛ የመከራ ቀን ብዙ ተጎድተናል፤ ከጉዳታችም አንዱ የአቡነ ጴጥሮስ በባንዳዎች ትብብር መረሸን ነው። መስቀሉ የዚህ ምስክር ነው። ቫቲካንም ይቅርታ ልትጠይቅበት ይገባል። እውነተኛ አባቶቻችንም ይህንን ጥያቄ እንድትጠይቁ ጩኽታችን ይድረሳችሁ።
አባታችን ካህን አሮንና ልጆቹ የእስራኤልን ልጆች እንደባረካቸው፣ ያዕቆብም በሸመገለ ጊዜ ኤፍሬምንና ምናሴን እንደባረካቸው አባታችን ሰማዕቱ አቡነ ጴጥሮስም የኢትዮጵያን ልጆችና ምድሯን ሁሉ ስለእውነትና ነጻነት የባረከበት የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ ሀብትና ቅርስ የሆነው ያ ታሪካዊ መስቀልም ትናንትም ዛሬም ወደፊትም የማይሸጥ፣ የማይለውጥና የሀገርና የህዝብ ሀብት ነው።
ይህ መስቀል አቡነ ጴጥሮስ የነፍሳችን መዳኛ እንዲሆን እንድናስተውል ለኢትዮጵያ አለኝታ እንዲሆነን ትቶልን ያለፈ የእውነት ቅርስ ነውና ዘበነ (መምህር) መልስ! በሀገርና በዓለም ዙሪያ የምትገኙ Iትዮጵያውን ይህ መስቀል እንዲመለስ የበኩላችሁን ጥረት ታደርጉ ዘንድ ጥሪ ይድረሳችሁ። በተለይም የአሜሪካ ድምፅ ሬዲዮ፣ የጀርመን ድምፅ ሬዲዮ፣ ነፃነት ለኢትዮጵያ ሬዲዮ፣ የህብረት ሬድዮ፣ አዲስ ድምፅ ሬዲዮ፣ የኢትዮጵያ ሴቶች ድምፅ ሬዲዮ፣ የኢትዮጵያዊነት ሬዲዮ፣ የሀገር ፍቅር ሬዲዮ፣የኢትዮጵያ የዘውድ ምክር ቤትና እንዲሁም ሌሎችም የህዝብ መገናኛ አውታሮችና ድረ ገጾች የሀገርን ቅርስ ከማስመለስና የሀገርን ታሪክ ለተተኪው ትውልድ ከማቆየት አኳያ በጉዳዩ ላይ ጥሪ አድርገንላችኋለንና ምላሻችሁን እንጠብቃለን። ስለሁሉም ነገር ልዑል እግዚያብሔር ይመስገን።

From your writing it is easy to see that you don’t have a good command of the English language. Be that as it may, your allegation that the seven people you identified by name “gave our church to Aba Diabilos” is at best laughable. One hundred and ninety two independent minded adults made their choice on July 11. Your laughable allegation is an insult to the intelligence of the other 185 people who exercised their rights freely.
If you really are concerned about the welfare of, as you put it, “our church” you should engage the people you identified by name in a civilized conversation face to face rather than hiding behind the keyboard using a fictitious name to make a point in a foreign language that you obviously haven’t learned very well. Maybe you will learn something from them .Who knows you might even reveal to them something they don’t know.
For the record, the individuals you slandered are respected members of the church and the Ethiopian community at large.
What have you done for your church and community lately besides slandering individuals. Did you volunteer your services? Were you willing to ran for office when the call came out?
