Ethiopian woman convicted in boyfriend’s bomb plot in London

Posted on

(AP) LONDON — The partner of a would-be suicide bomber who attempted to attack London’s subway system was convicted Wednesday for not warning police about the plot.

A jury in London found 32-year-old Yeshi Girma guilty of failing to provide information before her partner Hussain Osman and others attempted to set off explosions on the transit system on July 21, 2005. The bombs didn’t explode fully and no one was injured.

The attempted attacks came two weeks after four suicide bombers killed 52 subway and bus passengers in London.

Mulu Girma, 24, and Esayas Girma, 22, Yeshi’s sister and brother, were also both found guilty of failing to disclose information and helping Osman.

Mulu Girma’s boyfriend Mohamed Kabashi, 25, pleaded guilty to both charges before the trial.

A date for sentencing was not set immediately. The maximum sentence for failing to inform police is five years.

Yeshi Girma, who wept as the verdict was announced, had claimed that she was not married to Osman, with whom she had three children, that she didn’t live with him, and knew little of what he was doing. Prosecutors say she is his wife.

They said she helped Osman flee the country after the attempt, and that her fingerprints had been found on tapes of extremist Islamic sermons. She allegedly also allowed Osman to take their young son to a training camp in northwestern England where he met others involved in the plot.

“Yeshi Girma had prior knowledge of the events of 21/7. She had some information about what the bombers intended to do on 21/7, but failed to bring this to the attention of the police,” prosecutor Max Hill told jurors.

“Armed with that prior knowledge of what was going to happen, Yeshi Girma could have attempted to prevent the attacks, which, but for shortcomings in the production of the explosive devices, would have killed and injured many people,” he said.

Osman was sentenced to life in prison in the case along with Muktar Said Ibrahim, Yassin Omar and Ramzi Mohammed. Another plotter, Manfo Kwaku Asiedu, was sentenced to 33 years in prison.

Five other men were also convicted and sentenced to prison for assisting the plotters.

  1. Weye Mealti, I wish these individuals have participated and involved in the killing of TPLF officials especially Bereket or someone so that the TPLF memebers can get start frustrated and others will be motivated as well. These guys would’ve been our hero. Unfortunately, they got involved in a very destruction way to kill innocent civilians. Guys unless we start setting up killing main TPLF officials in the city areas, it would be very difficult to achieve our goal using the gorilla type armed struggle.

  2. OMG what sort of attitude was that comment above by Hagos.. no wonder Ethiopia remains the low of lowest society relatively with mentality like that. Editors should keep the intellectual minimum standard for me to comment or any one whatever difference opinion may be. No wonder despite all the injustices of weyane they still remain in power and intact with ppl like this giving the struggle against weyana a cheapish look and disrespect. How sad on editor as well as who ever commented above..

  3. why not?….. had Adolf Hitler was killed on the first assassination attempt, millions could have survived.. TPLF gangs have continued killing and destroying Ethiopia and seem not stopping from their vicious actions.. so, eliminating them is the only option to save the nations.. as there is no any powerfull conventional army to topple them, the good strategy would be to start targeted attack on key personalities who wash their hands with the blood of innocent civilians

  4. but these convicted individuals, who tried to terrorize innocent nation and civilians in London, are vicious by themselves and evils like killer TPLF gangs…. they deserv even more punishment than 5 years in prison..

  5. What evil act have Londoners ever done to the Ethiopians that these immoral, promiscuous, and unmannered Ethiopian women have plotted to kill innocent Londoners? England has been home for many great and small, poor and rich Ethiopians for many, many years, and its friendly people should not deserve such a heinous crime. What do the rest of those innocent Ethiopian girls learn from these murderous Ethiopian women? They learn nothing else but plot, adultery, and murder; Islam and Christianity do not train their girls to be prostitutes and killers; where did these wanton Ethiopian girls learn the art of plot to kill and to be members of the plotters and the criminals and get children from them? Such things are strange for most of us Ethiopians, and I hope they will remain strange for ever and ever. In the name of my Ethiopian friends, Forgive us Londoners!

  6. What the hell are you talking about guys, like any human beingS Ethiopians are capable of being scientists, criminals or what ever there is to be. Don’t be full of it.

  7. I am glad they had been convicted all those years.I can’t believe the guy tried to go to Italy after what he had done. They deserved the verdict.”Bagoresku ejen tenekesku” #6 said it all.I can’t believe Ethiopian Muslims involved in such disgraceful act. They were known by their peaceful behavier. This is the problem to bring foreign fanatic culture to our peaceful and respectful people.I hope those will be the last Ethiopians with this kind of barberic action.

  8. how could any ethiopian try to kill innocent londoners? there is no need to cry,if she had an information that her children father is going to kill innocent ppl and she failed to give any information to the police, she deserves even more than 5 years. we asked them a shleter , they gave us shelter, food and cloth for that they do not dserve bomb . they desrve big thanks.
