(Eurosport) –According to sources, the Ethiopian has not yet fully recovered after competing in the World Cross Country Championships.
Abraham Jeylan, Eshetu Wondimu and Gebregziabher Gebremariam will represent Ethiopia in the discipline on the opening day of the event.
Bekele has also pulled out of the 5,000 metres, meaning that he will not be competing in the event in Addis Ababa at all.
His next track appearance is scheduled for May 24th at the FBK Games in Hengelo, Netherlands, where he will run the 5,000 metres.
The action in Addis Ababa began with the decathlon in good conditions and temperatures of around 22°C.
The fastest time in four heats of the women’s 100 metres was 11.55, set by title defender Vida Anim of Ghana as all the favourites advanced.
The three finals to be run on the first day are the men’s 10,000 metres, men’s shot put men and women’s hammer throw.

can you tell us about eastern, western and southern Ethiopia in addition to the north that we hear about? do call them tribes. that is racist european mentality
thank U
The African Championships’ organising committee has awarded Abebe Bikila, Haile G/Selassie, Tagart and Elguruj (but not for Kenenissa) for their achievements in atheletics sport. It seems the award was given based on their long-time achievements, particularly in the olympics.
So, does this make Kenenisa to quit from the African Championships? Is he jealous of them>, so does he want to punish/upset the committee?…if so, he’s poor…and, it’s a source of tallented athelets….
yeah, if u win in The Netherlands n other European country, they give check….but, if u win in the African Championships, they give u a falg.
how sad, Keno?
u should run in your own country,,,at least to make happy your fans…
Dear How,
You said:- European country, they give check….but, if u win in the African Championships, they give u a falg…
If that the case why are you here in USA? Ethiopian will be happy to pay you in birr if you come back and work in Ethiopia but you choice USA because of money? then why are you having problem Kenenissa looking for his best interest after all the Afirca govt never care about their heroes? Look Ababa family they are living in poverty so many of our long distance hero….
You might say the Afircan govt doesn’t have money but they have land… they can give land for free for the winner you know how much money that will bring on today market? they can give them tax free award so that all their business will not be taxed? you know how much investment their will atract if they know they will not be taxed if they become partnership with kenenissa… there are many way to make moany in Ethiopia as long as the govt. willing to give it…
I’m surprised Kenenisa dropped out. If it is a protest, then it is a little disappointing. He’ll surely be inducted someday.
In the meantime, it’s sad we won’t get to see him run. I was looking forward to updating my page about him with another victory!

to how about
1. i think u r a foreigner. there r no jobs in ethiopia. do u know how many ppl in ethiopia without jobs? all most, all.
2. i, as the majority of ethiopians, came here for other reasons, not for money. and, there is no money left in the pocket over here. i work, earn money, then pay the bills and other expenses – no money, bro. Do u think all people live abroad r rich? u r wrong. May b u r luck 2 save enough money – means u better go back.
3. about keno, he should run in his own country. We don’t want 2 b beaten by other countries’ runniers in our yards. Fortunately, we won without him. We have other good runners too. Besides, we all love him so, the people back home deserve to see him running personally rather than watch him on screens.
