Kinijit supreme council elects new executives

The supreme council of the Coalition for Unity and Democracy Party (Kinijit) was convened today to decide the future direction of the party.

The council has elected the following five individuals to the 20-member executive committee in the place of Ato Lidetu Ayalew and associates who left the party: 1) Dr Hailu Araya, 2) Ato Asrat Tase, 3) Ato Kifle Tigneh, 4) Ato Temesgen Zewde, and 5) Ato Mohammed Ali.

The council has postponed a decision on the status of Ato Abayneh’s group in the executive committee for now.

Since the Woyanne-controlled Electoral Board of Ethiopia has arbitrarily given the name ‘Coalition for Unity and Democracy’ to an individuals named Ayele Chamiso, the council has authorized the executive committee to come up with a new name within a week and register it with the electoral board. Some of the names suggested include: Coalition for Justice and Democracy, Coalition for Freedom and Democracy, Coalition for Freedom and Unity, Coalition for Democracy Party…

  1. Great. The restructuring of Kinijit is on. We know who the real Kinijit is. So, it is not a big deal using any name to restore the real Kinijit in the future when that sweet day comes.

    If they have to pick a new name, let it be Coalition for Freedom and democracy. Freedom and democracy are strong bases for Unity. I think it should include the name Ethiopia somewhere. How about calling it, ” Ethiopian Coalition for Freedom and Deomacracy (ECFD)”.

    Elias, what do you think? Can you suggest this name if you have access to some of them?

  3. I prefer the name Coalition for Freedom and Democracy (CFD)!! With this name they can rally the whole nations in the empire behind them! The word UNITY is already contaminated with chauvinst ideas. The word justice connects the party with the new name of EPLF in Eritrea. With the name FREEDOM they can rally all freedom thirsty Amharas, Oromos, Tigarus, Somalis, Sidamas, Afars, Gurages…etc behind them!!

  7. “Ethiopian Unity Party(EUP)or in Amharic (“YE ETHIOPIA ANDENET PARTY”) is a good name at this critical time in our history. Please communiucate this to them if you can Elias!

  9. Registering any name with the NEB legitimizes the NEB and the government. So does giving up Kinijit’s name because of an EPRDF decision. Don’t play Woyanne’s game!

  11. I think the next name should focus on economic change for ethiopian. May be something about developement…it is not democracy without food is nothing. People need to eat first before they can think about justice.

  15. only we can bring true democracy and strong unity when we can install true jurdical system.So Coalition for justice , democracy and unity is the right and senseable name.Alack of free jurdical system becomes our common obstacle to install well based democracy and secure our unity. we need to have a coalition to bring justice , democracy and only through true justice system and democracy can be secured our unity. So CJDUP IS WILL BE WELL ACCEPTABLE NAME BY ALL ETHIOPIANS AS FAR ASALL ARE LACK OF THESE

  17. To remember those who lost their life during the 97 election I suggest the new name to be Kinijit 97 or Coalition 97. This will also help the party supporters to differentiate the pro woyanne Kinijit from the right one.

  19. Very nice our party is trying to restructure itself after all the messes it passed throgh(some of them embarassing for we the supporters, ofcourse). I have always been debating with colleagues about the name of the future kinijit long before it was given to the Chamiso group. We like it or not, the name kinijit by now is associated with sort of confusion, cluelessness, embezzelment, power mongering, infidelity, name callings and the likes unlike its previous association with freedom, democracy, human rights, justice and economic development. So, as once rightly commented by a young political analyst, a rigorous and effective political marketing strategy need to be adopted to regain the goodwill and support the “kinijit” name used to enjoy. The kinjit principles and the spirit for democracy and justice left untouched, I believe the leaders should come up with a different name that has got no relationship with the previous name. This, I think, will have two advantages:
    1. There will not be name confusion with the pseudo “kinijit” especially among the illiterate group and rural areas. Same problem is being witnessed by the “Oromo National Congress” and “Oromo People’s Congress”, the previous and the new party names of Prof. Merara Gudina
    2. It will be helpful to organize supporters with a new energy by leaving aside all the bad associations with the name kinijit.

    As a suggestion for the naming I prefer if the new party comes up with the name “Tesfa Le Ethiopia Party” “Hope for Ethiopia Party” which I think will relate Ethiopia’s current quagmire it is in and its requirement to get itself out of there.

  20. Glory to the Almighty God of Ethiopia. The spirit of Kinijit is eternal. For now, I agree with those who proposed Coalition for Justice, Democracy and Unity. Kinijit 97 is also an attractive proposal by Yehwalashet (#17).

  21. I prefer “Coalition for Justice and Democracy (CJD)” because what we really need is true, transparent and accountable judgement which is called ‘justice’, and ofcourse genuine democracy.
    What ever name they come up with we are are standing with them.
