June 21 – A CUD MP-elect escaped assassination attempt. Ato Seid Muhammed, a CUD candidate who has been elected to parliament from the Dessie Zuria constituency, has escaped an assassination attempt yesterday. According to Ato Seid’s friends, EPRDF cadres opened fire on him as he walked on a public street. He escaped the assassination attempt uninjured, and now he is in hiding. Following the attempt on Ato Seid’s life, the police rounded up hundreds of CUD members and students in Kombolcha and surrounding areas and sent them to unknown locations. We are hearing about similar stories of massive repression by the EPRDF government through out the country. We are reporting here only what we can verify with first hand accounts. While every one is focusing on Addis Ababa, Meles and his cadres of terrorists are avenging EPRDF’s election loss in rural areas of the country with impunity.

June 20 – Lisa Friedman’s report yesterday about U.S. Congressman Rohrbacher and U.S. aid to Ethiopia is misleading, to put it mildly. The Congressman’s bill (HR 1061) is not only about one Eritrean-Ethiopian, according to this letter. HR 1061 is intended to help thousands of Ethiopians whose properties have been nationalized.

June 21 – The Meles regime has opened a Nazi-like concentration camp at a place called Denkoro Chaka. This place is in the middle of a huge jungle about 200 km south of Kombolcha. According to eyewitnesses, thousands of young Ethiopians from Wollo, Gonder and other regions are being detained in this concentration camp. The prisoners, mostly young people from poor families, are given one bread a day, some times none. Every day, they are savagely beaten, and forced to walk on sharp stones. They are also exposed to malaria. The way the local people describe what is going at this camp is sickening.
