Imprisoned Ethiopian journalist died

Jailed journalist Abay Hailu died of pneumonia on February 9. His family and colleagues said that his death could have been prevented if he had received proper medical treatment in time.

Ato Abay was arrested on February 22, 1996, for writing an article about an impending danger of attack by Islamic groups in his weekly newspaper Wolafen.

Reporters sans Frontieres (RSF -Reporters without Borders) said “Abay Hailu had been in the prison clinic for two months before receiving medical treatment for five days at the Menelik Hospital where he died.”  In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, RSF said it held Meles responsible for Abay’s death. RSF also asked Meles to release all the journalists imprisoned in Ethiopia.
