The Ethiopian government and the public were urged today to implement “the platform for action” adopted at the fourth world conference on women held recently in Beijing, china.
Ethiopia’s women delegation leader Tadelech Hailemikeal, who is also minister in charge of the prime minister’s office, told the audience that at the beijing conference women from all over the world discussed and passed resolutions on such points as women in education, law, politics, health and especially women’s rights from birth up to the stage of their participation in the society.
She said, the 150-page document was endorsed by the majority of delegations including ethiopia. Some delegates were unable to reach decisions on issues such as inheritance and circumcision saying that they do not go along with their laws, she explained. She noted that the implementation by countries of the document which is believed to ensure women’s rights will be assessed by the report they produce from time to time.
Previous women conferences were largely devoted to mapping out strategies to resolve the socio-economic problems facing women while at the Beijing conference women discussed and passed decisions on plans of action, she stressed.
Tadelech said african countries which participated in the conference attempted to voice their wishes, adding that the document was prepared in such a way that it ensured the interest of poor countries.
