EDP leaders hold rally in Dessie and Bahr Dar

The Ethiopians’ Democratic Party (EDP) will hold rallies in the northern Ethiopian towns of Dessie and Bahr Dar tomorrow, Sunday.
The main purpose of these public meetings is to mobilize opposition to the UN border decision. In the past few weeks, EDP leaders held similar rallies in Awasa and Nazreth. Next week EDP’s two high-level teams will hold rallies in Mekele and Harer.
EDP leaders have condemned the brutal actions of security forces against students in Ambo, Nekemt and Ghimbi who are protesting the government’s misguided agricultural policy that is hurting farmers in the region. EDP has said that brutal measures will only exacerbate the problem. Hundreds of students are currently in detention and at least two have died in confrontations with Meles Zenawi’s security forces.
EDP is also expressing sadness at the lose of hundreds of lives as a result of ethnic clashes in the town of Tepi, the capital of Yeki woreda, Sheko zone. EDP is blaming the Meles regime’s ethnic policy as the main cause of the this and other ethnic clashes, such as Bedeno, Gedio-Gujji, and Wollega, that have resulted in the lose of lives and displacement of tens of thousands of people.
