Ethiopia’s
population has topped 65.5 Million, according to a report released this
week by the country’s Central Statistical Authority. Within another
seven years, the report adds, the country’s population is expected to
reach 80 million. The rate of population growth, however, has dropped to
2.7 from an all time high of 3.2 that was prevalent in the 80s and 90s. Fertility
rates—the average number of children a woman bears in her lifetime—had
dropped slightly from 6.4 children per woman in 1990 to 5.9 this year.
Ethiopia’s population is expected to double to a staggering 130 million by
2030.
Ethiopian
Airlines reports a profit after last year’s loss due to the war. The
airlines also plans to purchase as many as 12 aircrafts in the next few
years.
Oldest
humanoid bones found in the Awash valley, once again, puts Ethiopia as
home of oldest human ancestors.
