A man arguing with his sister over medical bills stabbed the 45-year-old woman to death in front of her four children in the family’s home early Wednesday morning, Miramar police spokesman Bill Robertson said.

Mesfin Tesfamariam, 56, is accused of gashing Alganesh Yohannes in her upper torso and legs at the Silver Shores community in the 1800 block of SW 166th Avenue, Robertson said.

Yohannes died in surgery at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood at 3:50 a.m.

When police arrived on the scene at about 12:20 a.m., Tesfamariam was covered in blood a block away, police said. He told officers he had “left the knife in the house,” Robertson said.

Tesfamariam later confessed to the crime during a taped interview with investigators at the Police Department, Robertson said.

He had been living with Yohannes family since emigrating from Africa about a year ago.

Yohannes’ husband was at work when the stabbing occurred, Robertson said. The four children, two boys and two girls, ages 15, 14, 13 and 11, are with the husband.

The case was under investigation.

Tesfamariam was being held at the Broward County Main Jail without bond on one count of unpremeditated murder.
