Jailed Ethiopian opposition leaders appeared in court

The jailed CUD leaders and journalists appeared in court today. They were cheered on by hundreds of supporters who waited for them outside the court. They responded with CUD’s V sign.

Today’s court hearing was to decided on bail, but after a long hearing on the prosecutors’ witnesses and the type of charges, the judge ordered the defendants to appear in court again next Wednesday.

The prosecutors also refused to release the names of the witnesses against the CUD leaders. The judge was not willing to conduct a hearing on bail, even though he said last week that today’s hearing was to be on bail.

Meanwhile, Addis Ababa university evening class students, joined by high school students, staged a protest rally late in the evening local time. The students demanded the release of the CUD leaders.
