Bro, it is a freedom of speech, watch comedy central. He has a right to make jokes, as long as he is an entertainer. Do not try to itimidate those kind of individuals.
This is ABC of free speech. I am sure he made that joke for entertaining purpose only and doe snot have any signifcant effect. balger in American sense is not an insult, but since we are thinking the opposite all thetime we have taken it as an insult.
In America, Cow boy, conservative all are peasants or Blager (who own the country); but in Ethiopia it is the opposite being blager or coming from the region is a kind of being uncivil, but grow up in the city like Addis, is considered as civility, which is absurd.
In american if you are from the city they consider you as a gang, or someone who does not have ethics or moral.
I love my balager name, I am a son of a proud peasant.
someone who does not have a clue about civilization call me as balager and thinks he/she undermine me, that is their ignorancy, I can not do anything but it would be good if they understand how musch they do not know.
Bro, take it as a freedom of speech.

Is Tamagne listning?
People want you to come cean. Don't forget that the "Balager" farmers of Lasta-Lalibela may one day catch you, and ask you why you tried to insult them? Could your answer be like that of the 19th century "Azmari"? May be! But I can't guess of their reply!

Don't try to read between the line ,the Menzumma is funny, the peasant joke is just pointed at Lidetu Ayalew period.'Balagar' in Amharic means ,somebody who doesn't know what is going on around him.The peasants of Lalibela are smart and they showed that by voting against the rutheless blood [deleted] Bereket Simon.Aiga and co has never blamed the blood suker Meles but they are the first to understand the 'Ballager' joke.

mekidela,

Thanks for your response, but we are talking about Ethiopian culture here, not about America. Anyways, I see your point that Tamagne is just an entettainer, and generally entertainers have a loose-tounge. But some times "entertainer Azmaris" like Tamagne may land on trouble in some conservative areas where "Regim Melas" is not tolerated.

Azeb,

Yes I agree with you that the Lasta peasants are determined fighters for their rights, but I am not sure that they like the "a loose tounge Azmari" like Tamagne.

Teklu,

You don't deserve a response.

Bro, I feel you.
Balager is an insult in Ethiopia, but it should not be. Anyhow, I like classify people based on their intelectual capacity and respecting their fellow humanbeing. Civil society means, a society which has big respect to human life period.
I am sure we ethiopians need cultrular revolution, because we have been far from the reality the last 3000years and still we are beating the same dead horse and immune to embrace advanced and modern cultrue. I am not generally belitinling our cultrue, but we have bad and good, then we need to discarded the bad one and strengthen the good one.
Do not forget, individual right and freedom speech are the core to build democry in our country.
Tamagne is a simple entertainer and he can say anything as he does not cause physical damage.
