Berhanu Nega is going against the people's desire

Ethiopian Review Editorial
Sep 21, 2005

A statement has been posted in the name of CUD on Kestedemena Party’s web site that contradicts Ato Hailu Shawel’s announcement that CUD will not enter parliament. The statement does not bear CUD’s official stamp, and we have confirmed that the CUD council did not authorize the statement posted on Kestedemena’s web site against its chairman.

The Kestedemena Party chairman, Dr Berhanu Nega, who is the campaign manager for CUD, also held a press conference today (Sep 21) and told reporters that Ato Hailu’s statement doesn’t represent CUD. Dr Berhanu doesn’t have the authority to contradict the chairman of CUD. By coming out against Ato Hailu, not only he is violating party discipline, he is also creating confusion and frustration among the CUD supporters, and the public at large.

Of course, this is not the first time that Dr Berhanu tried to contradict the CUD chairman and assuming the role of CUD leader. Since May 15, he has been trying to silence the chairman who has been championing the cause of the vast majority of Ethiopians for past several years. It is absurd why an election campaign manager is given a free hand to destroy the image of the coalition and its chairman. Dr Berhanu, who has appeard in the opposition camp just a few months before the election, has been the source of confusion and division in the CUD. Once again, Ethiopian Review urges the CUD leadership to take a corrective action as soon as possible in order to preserve its creditability.

The people of Ethiopia are with Ato Hailu Shawel. If Dr Berhanu wants to work with the murderous regime of Meles Zenawi, that is his right. But he must not be allowed to use CUD as a cover to advance his own agenda.

The people of Ethiopia have spoken clearly–they don’t want to be governed by the Meles regime for five more years. Berhanu Nega must respect the people’s desire to be liberated from dictatorship now, not five years from now.

Meles Zenawi's ruling party said it would form a new government on Thursday

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) – Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi’s ruling party said it would form a new government on Thursday, despite the opposition’s refusal to accept the results of May elections it says were fraudulent.

The African Union appealed to political parties in the Horn of Africa country to settle any disputes through the courts and dialogue. Opposition parties are due to announce on Thursday how they intend to challenge the election results.

The latest in a slow trickle of results from the May 15 parliamentary poll confirmed Meles on Tuesday as winner of a second term in Africa’s top coffee grower.

Claims of fraud in what was considered Ethiopia’s most democratic poll sparked protests and a military clampdown that left at least 36 people dead.

The ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) said in a statement that the opposition was calling for the formation of a national reconciliation government through power-sharing but that this was not acceptable.

“The question of sharing power through negotiation will not be acceptable,” EPRDF said. “According to the national constitution, only the party which wins a majority vote can form the government. Any anti-constitutional move will not be accepted to just quench the thirst of power of the opposition.”

The opposition parties were not immediately available for comment.

In what appeared to be an endorsement of the process, the Addis Ababa-based AU praised Ethiopians’ participation and the nation’s “democratisation” in general.

“The African Union … appeals to all political parties to work together in the national interest and if need be, pursue any outstanding issues through due processes of the law and agreed mechanisms including dialogue,” it said in a statement.

“The African Union wishes to congratulate the people of Ethiopia for having freely expressed their will,” it said.

CONSTITUENCY RESULTS

The latest batch of constituency results announced by the National Election Board gave EPRDF 296 parliamentary seats, past the 274 it needs for a majority.

The two main opposition coalitions, other opposition parties and independent candidates now have 176 out of 547 seats, far more than the 20 they had in the last parliament.

EPRDF affiliates won another 20 seats.

The main opposition Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) has said the electoral board was biased toward the ruling party.

It and the United Ethiopian Democratic Forces (UEDF) opposition party were to hold a news conference on Thursday to outline how they would challenge the result.

Meles has in the past been feted by Western leaders and was a prominent member of the British-sponsored Africa Commission giving recommendations to the G8 group of rich nations on how to tackle the continent’s problems.

EPRDF cadres killed CUD election observer Aschalew Gelem in Debre Sina

Ato Aschalew’s friends told ER associate in Addis Ababa today that the EPRDF cadres kidnapped him on June 24. His body was found three days later outside the town of Debre Sina, Wollo. He was killed with a gun shot to the head.

The EPRDF cadres have also burned the homes of several people in Debre Sina, Ambassel, and other rural towns whom they suspect as CUD supporters. As a result, thousands of people from these areas are now taking refuge in Dessie. The refugees say that they were chased out of their homes by angry EPRDF cadres.

Gonder University students went on hunger strike

Students at Gonder University’s main campus have been on hunger strike since Friday. The students decided to go on a hunger strike to protest the arrest of six of the student association’s leaders and members.

Eyewitnesses told ER that the chairman of the student association, Ato Temesgen, and two of his deputies, Ato Berhanu and Ato Abraham are in jail accused of organizing students protests.

Meanwhile, the local EPRDF office gave AK-47s and handguns to some students at the university who are EPRDF cadres and members, violating the university’s rules, and further aggravating the tension. The cadre-students are carrying their guns from class to class.

The university students said they will continue to protest and refuse to take exams until EPRDF troops leave the university campus and the cadre-students are disarmed.

Right now, the university is surrounded by heavily armed troops and police.

Fearing that other schools will join the protest, EPRDF security forces are rounding up students in the Gonder area schools. Prisons are now crowded with students, the local people told ER.

The administrator of Lay Armacho, Ato Getnet, in particular, has become notorious in arresting and abusing students.
